5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Resume

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Resume5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your ResumeCleaning your resume regularly and having it spruced up and ready to go is crucial. Are you groaning? We know- its common advice. But, if youre like most people, its advice that you repeatedly ignore. Youre not showcasing your resume unless youre actively job hunting, which means its easy to let it slip to the back burner until you need it again. In an effort to avoid that frantic scramble to get your resume in tip-top shape right when you need it, theres no time like right now to do a little spring cleaning on that document of yours. Here are five tips for cleaning your resume so you have an impressive resume ready to go1. Check over the basics. Those nuts and bolts things on your resume are easy to overlook- but, its important that theyre up to date.Did you get a new phone number? Do you have a new email address? Did your last name change since the last time you were job searching? That sort of basic information might not be the most exciting stuff that appears on your resume. However, you should still do your due diligence to ensure that its all accurate.2. Add new stttes. If you havent update your resume since the last time you were hunting for a new job, then chances are good that your current position isnt even listed on there. Make sure to add any new positions to your document and then change the employment dates on your previous role accordingly.Another thing you need to make sure to update? Your verb tense. Your existing position should be the only one with responsibilities listed in present tense- all of your old jobs should be written in past tense.Thats a minor change thats easy to miss, but goes a long way in presenting you as polished and detail-oriented3. Swap out some verbs.Speaking of verbs, you can make your resume far more impactful by swapping out some of them. If three bullets in a row start with the word managed, its probably best if you make an effort to get some new wo rds in there.Try some other action verbs like coordinated, spearheaded, oversaw, directed, trained, or supervised, for example. Not only does this do away with that obnoxious word repetition, but it also makes a far more powerful impression.4. Tell your story. What appears at the top of your resume? If its an objective statement, then youre probably well overdue for a refresh. Most employers agree that the objective statement is a thing of the past, and theyd much rather see you start your resume with a summary that highlights your most impressive and relevant skills and qualifications. So, kick that objective to the curb and replace it with something that reveals a little more about what makes you a suitable candidate.Already have a summary on your resume? Its still worth turning your attention to that section to see what updates you can make. You probably have additional years of experience or some new skills youve picked up since you originally wrote that blurb.5. Delete the old st uff.The above steps have helped you bring some new touches to your resume. But, what about the old stuff thats only collecting dust on your resume? If you have anything thats so far in the past its hardly relevant or impressive anymore, its time to hit the backspace key. That professional license that you let expire? Theres no point including it on your resume. That college internship? Its probably not that important after youve been in the working world for 15 years. The general rule of thumb is that anything older than 10 years probably doesnt deserve the precious real estate on your resume. Is it time to start spring cleaning your resume? Put these tips into action, and youll have an impressive resume polished up and ready to go when you need itKnow someone looking for a job? 5 resume-writing rules you should break in 2018

5 resume-writing rules you should break in 20185 resume-writing rules you should break in 20181. The rule that says you cant use the word I in your resume. Of course you can Its your branding document, after all2. The rule that says you must list the tasks and duties you performed at every past job. Those are things anyone in the role would have done. Tell us what you achieved, specifically.3. The rule that says you must list every job you ever held on your resume. Your resume is a branding document, bedrngnis a legal document. Include the jobs you want to include on your resume and leave out the rest.4. The rule that says you must list your past jobs with no explanation of why you moved from one job to the next. What hiring managers really want to understand is your path so share it with them Try to use the last bullet under each job to explain why you left, something like thisI built Zangos first PR program, and got our CEO on national TV within six months.Together with our Market ing team I built our public webinar series from 85 to 650 participants in one year.I left Zango when the firm was bought by Reddingo. Now your hiring manager knows why youre job hunting. Reducing uncertainty is your principal job as a resume writer5. Finally, go ahead and break the old-fashioned resume-writing rule that states you must focus on numeric and measurable achievements in your resume. Thats ridiculousIf you conceived and sold a huge, groundbreaking idea to your CEO, COO, CTO or any senior of yours it doesnt matter so much whether or not you stuck around long enough to binnensee the idea implemented or to see its measurable results. You can still tell the story, whether youve got numbers to share or not

6 Resume Red Flags You Can Avoid

6 Resume Red Flags You Can Avoid 6 Resume Red Flags You Can Avoid There is a lot of truth to the old adage You cant beat someone at their own game. In the resume game, the people who own it are the recruiters, sources, and HR staffers whose business it is to parse hundreds of resumes each week. They can put your resume into the larger context in a matter of seconds. Their job is to constantly be on the lookout for any disqualifying factor. Here are six key red flags you should avoid1. Generic resume. If you want to earn serious consideration from an employer, provide the saatkorn to him or her. If it appears that you havent taken the time to customize your resume for the specific job in which you are interested and the company where its found, you raise the most basic red-flag question What is the relevance of this resume to this particular job?Solution Customize each resume you send out and make certain you mirror the words found in the job description on your resume. Show how, when , and where you developed the talent and expertise to meet the needs of the lokalitt for which you are applying.2. Resume appearance malfunction. Is your resume friendly to the beholder who wears bifocals? Non-standard fonts, small text with little to no space between sections, and narrow margins all raise red flags. Beyond the poor aesthetics, they may suggest you are the kind of person who is bound and determined to wedge too large a story into too small a space, rather than boiling down the salient aspects of your career achievements into a document which clearly speaks to the job to be filled.Solution Remember that your resume is notlage your unabridged autobiography. You arent obligated to show everything you have ever done and every place you worked. Its a marketing document onto which you should put the things that are most germane. Use a standard font at a reasonable type size and forget all the lines, graphics, pictures, and colors.3. Poor grammar spelling. In an age when everyone has spellchecking capacities, there is no excuse for misspelled words. At the same time, theres no end to the ways words get mangled into other words with different meanings. When either happens, it stands in sharp opposition to your claim of being a good communicator. Moreover, it raises the red-flag question If this candidate is too lazy or incapable of checking his or her own resume, what will be sloughed off if they were on the job? Every career expert would agree that careful proofreading is critical.4. Resume timeline gaps. Is it easy to follow the sequential steps of your career with dates set apart, flush right? Are there multiple gaps in years without explanation? Its perfectly acceptable- even meritorious- to address those legitimate gaps with just a phrase or two without going into great detail. You might, as the last bullet under a given job say something like Left position to pursue additional educational opportunities or Left position to deal with a family memb ers chronic medical problem which was ultimately resolved.5. Resume evasiveness. There are many things that job hunters typically try to fudge. Yet, overgeneralizations, squishy language, and omissions are not generally regarded well. For example, job hunters in their 50s and 60s believe they can avoid age discrimination if they omit dates when degrees were earned. But just the opposite is the case. In attempting to skirt the age issue, you actually bring attention to it with your unstated but very clear message I dont want you to figure out how old I am based on when I attended college. Worse, you may potentially also raise the red-flag question Is this job seeker trying to mask anything else of significance?6. Key phrase banalities. Some job hunters arent certain of how to go about the process of writing an effective resume, and so they resort to words and phrases found in resume-writing books and other templates that might be good starting points, but not ending points. By adherin g too closely to them, you are likely to sound like everyone else, without conveying any understanding of what you are really trying to convey. Using hackneyed phrases like hard worker, out-of-the-box thinker, team player, excellent communications skills, etc., offer your own conclusion about your talents and work ethic. But they do nothing to cause the resume reader to believe you or to come to the same conclusion. Instead, show examples of your out-of-the-box solutions and talk about times when your actions really did benefit your team.If you take the time to lower these red flags, you will raise the likelihood of gaining the respect and positive attention of those who own the resume game.Arnie Fertig is the head coach of JOBHUNTERCOACH.COM, where he utilizes his extensive background in HR Staffing and as owner of a recruiting company to help mid-career job-hunters land their next job. How Hiring Limitations Can Perpetuate the Skills Gap - Spark Hire

How Hiring Limitations Can Perpetuate the Skills Gap - Spark HireWhats in a name? Many people have wondered this over the years, including the bard himself, who conveniently created this memorable phrase to remind everyone that at times a name gives little or no meaning to what or who it is labeling. The same could be said for a companys job descriptions. Often, job titles can be very broad, giving little actual detail about the job, the everyday tasks the job requires, or the skills needed to fill the position. While at times a job has remained the same in substance year over year, some job descriptions are created with the knowledge that the position will develop and change over time. In addition, jobs often change in ways that an employee or their employer could not have imagined and a single, broad moniker cant account for this. This means that if hiring managers are searching for the right candidate by considering their previous job titles on their resume, they could be missing mu ch that goes on behind the name of the position. A study done by CareerBuilder revealed that about 55 percent of hiring managers who report having difficulty filling an open position generally hire people who have held a position with the same title as the post theyre currently trying to fill. The question begs to be asked what applicable skills or relevant experiences could they be overlooking by only accounting for the job titles a candidate has previously held?By limiting their search in this way, it is possible that companies are creating their own skills gap. The search for the right candidate is prolonged when a hiring manager only looks at previous job titles and doesnt consider the skills a candidate has which could be just as useful in the open position. Albeit, it may take some extra training to hone their skills for the new job, but the skills are there, present in the candidate, and are being lost because of traditional hiring habits. In response to the CareerBuilder stud y, Matt Ferguson writes in the Harvard geschftsleben Review that, For those who bemoan the lack of necessary skills in their current talent pool, deemphasizing the importance of candidates job titles is an easy way to expand. Ferguson sites another study by Economic Modeling Specialists International. The study points out that many nearly perfect candidates with the correct skills but the wrong job title can be missed in the hiring process. So, Ferguson says, a shift in focus is needed. How can you glean more about skills and less about descriptors from a resume or an interview? How do you discover what skills could be necessary to fill a position over what credentials would complement it? Questions more aligned with knowledge, skills, and ability, Ferguson says, are those that recruiters, hiring managers, and HR professionals should be asking.Have you hired someone with varied experience but the right skills for the job? How did you spot them? Let us know in the comments below.IMAG ECourtesyof Flickr bybortescristian

In fact, many believe that a significant other’s job title, a child’s acceptance into an elite university, an upcoming move to a new area of town, or even a simple weekend recap is information best kept to themselves. But I disagree- and I can make a strong case as to why getting to know your co-workers on a personal level is good for your career. 1. It Reduces Stress Of the nine different teams that I’ve worked on over the course of my professional career, I’ve been open about my life outside the office with about half of them. My reason for evasion was consistent; the decision was always rooted in fear: fear of judgment or rejection leading to some unforeseen negative consequence. I wondered if my teammates who were married with kids and living in the suburbs for the great school districts would relate to the new guy who moved in from out of town and lived in an apartment in the city with his girlfriend. If they didn’t relate, would I be the team outcast? It may sound silly, but it was stressful stuff! In hindsight, I can see that I was overthinking it. I didn’t need to reveal every detail about my relationship with my partner- our ups and downs and everything in between- but I also didn’t need to dwell in a place of secrecy. I think I’d have experienced a lot less stress and anxiety on a daily basis if I’d allowed myself some leeway, if I’d been comfortable coming in after a tough weekend dealing with my noisy neighbors- rather than just stewing in my own bad mood and pretending like everything in my life was always great. 2. It’s Revealing We’re all so much bigger than our 9-to-5 identities, so acting otherwise ultimately feels inauthentic. The truth is, our hobbies and interests tell others a lot about us. Perhaps you thrive on weekends as a hostess who throws awesome get-togethers. Maybe you’re a little league umpire, or a marathon runner. Whatever it is that you do when you’re not working is a part of your character. When you can relate to your colleagues beyond spreadsheet data, status reports, and best hiring practices, you begin to see them as multi-dimensional, and this can help you work better as a team. Plus, it might be hard to see how your DIY house renovations could benefit your day job, but look a little more deeply, and you’ll see that the skills utilized in your recreational pursuits are often ones that you’ll call upon in some tangential way as you tackle assignments. For example, a person on your team who’s super passionate about photography may be an asset when the company decides it needs to revamp all of its promotional marketing materials. The more people know about you, the more likely they are to call upon you to help with a new initiative or project. 3. It Allows You to Leave With Support No one has their entire career mapped out in front of them: You could get laid off, fired, or decide to quit when you get passed over for a promotion. You could make a decision to find a new job when your boss leaves or when a particular co-worker becomes more than you can handle on a daily basis. The point is, there’s a lot of professional unknowns. But if you form real relationships with people throughout your career, you never know how they may help you down the line. Instead of feeling like you have to build your network from scratch, you’ll have one in place should you need to relocate for your spouse’s job or get laid off If you proactively keep others up-to-date with what’s going on in your life, who knows how they might be able to help you down the line when you’re making a career transition. Individuals who you connect with on an intimate level are the ones who’ll be more likely to serve as excellent job references, write LinkedIn recommendations for you, and enthusiastically introduce you to their contacts. If you’re ready to go beyond standard work talk, but aren’t sure how to do it (or don’t want to commit to a weekly happy hour) consider striking up conversation in the kitchen or connecting on social media. You don’t need to invite your entire team to your housewarming party or Facebook-friend every member of your department right away. Start off slow if this is unfamiliar territory for you. Grab a coffee with a colleague- not an hour-long lunch. Instead of making the first words out of your mouth on Monday morning, “Did you get my email?” try, “How was your weekend? Do anything fun?” Once I started opening up among my colleagues, work got better. We spend so much time at the office that it just makes sense to be your authentic self.

Solar Energy Energy Opportunities for Young Engineers

Solar Energy Energy Opportunities for Young Engineers Solar Energy Energy Opportunities for Young Engineers Solar Energy: Energy Opportunities for Young Engineers By: Carol Milano The solar industry is growing rapidly, and consolidating, reports Seth Masia, Executive Director (interim) of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES), The big companies are becoming huge, while the smaller ones are getting pulled into the mother ship. Its like the auto business during the 20s, when General Motors and Chrysler took over their sector. Solar energy systems can be used to provide heat or electricity. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, which can provide electricity anywhere, are the worlds fastest-growing energy source, according to Brandon Leavitt, CEO of Solar Service in Niles IL. Solar thermal, which has been used for centuries, provides hot water and heat. Using the sun to heat water is a very practical solar application. In solar thermal systems, mechanical engineers work on pre-installation planning to determine the number of hot water panels. [The engineers] design and balance all the system components to optimize performance. All collection, exchange, storage, piping and other fluid handling components must be sized precisely. Small details, like properly locating a $20 sensor in the right place, determine whether or not the system will work properly, Leavitt discovered. The location for solar energy jobs is often counterintuitive, said Leavitt, who has a mechanical engineering background,Solar is not just for southern, sunny climates. Solar heating works best where its needed most: the farther north, the more valuable sunshine becomes. In Chicago, heat is needed for six to nine months a year. For year-round hot water, just four hours of sun can deliver a 24-hour supply of hot water.Thats why sizing and storage are so important. Of course, freeze protection is also an important consideration. Leavitt suggests that job-hunters, target states that offer good incentives to use solar thermal energy.(Visit www.dsireusa.org to identify them)Some engineering firms hire mechanical engineers to design pre-built commercial solar heat exchange modules.Leavitt advises, Look for companies specializing in solar hot water systems, including pool and space heating. An employer will probably want someone with an understanding of fluid-handling components, and knowledge of how solar can integrate into a conventional hot water system. To Masia, solar energy teems with mechanical problems awaiting solutions including: More foolproof, weatherproof electrical connections. Solar arrays are warrantied for 20 to 25 years and all components need to last that long. Quick, cheap screening systems to keep out rodents and birds. Better cooling systems for all components. Smoother approaches for incorporating solar panels directly into architectural elements. New ways to apply solar panels to vehicle roofs. Imagine the fuel savings of a refrigerated semi-trailer running its cooling system from a solar array, rather than burning diesel fuel. Companies outside the solar sector will also tackle these issues, predicts Masia, For instance, an automobile business might explore vehicular solar energy systems. Mechanical engineers should broaden their search, he suggested. This fast-evolving sector rewards ingenuity. One major installation cost is the tedious labor in bolting the racking systems. A market-share leader, Solar FlexRack, grew quickly by engineering a rack that two workers can unfold, onsite. Now, their competitors realize that clever mechanical engineering of the manufactured product is crucial for rapid deployment in the field, Masia explains, Some supplier will make a fortune putting solar panels onto a telescoping rack system that can be lifted from a flatbed truck onto a roof, unfolded, and bolted down by two workers in 15 minutes. A smart student who comes up with a working prototype will have a pretty slick way to get in the door! RESOURCES FOR READERS: The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) has regional chapters in 40 states, as well as student chapters on many campuses. Salary Negotiation Tips for New Grads

Salary Negotiation Tips for New Grads Salary Negotiation Tips for New Grads You’ve perfected your resume, jumped on the job posting, sent out your cover letter and aced the interviews. Now you’ve officially been offered the job. Congrats! But what if the salary is lower than what you had in mind? Think: What salary negotiation tips do new grads like you need? Sure, you’re just beginning your career, but that doesn’t mean salary negotiation is out of the question. After I graduated, I accepted my first offer without negotiating and have regretted it ever since. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Use these five salary negotiation tips to help you get within your target number. 1. Research, research, research Before getting involved in any sort of salary negotiation, do plenty of research about typical salary ranges in your specific area of expertise and with your level of experience. For starters, use salary tools like the latest Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance. This is industry’s most-respected resource for accounting and finance salary data, featuring pay ranges for more than 400 positions and exclusive insight into the hiring environment. Visit the Salary Center, where you'll be able to adjust salaries for accounting and finance jobs in your city with the Salary Calculator, and get your own copy of the Salary Guide. Another of the best salary negotiation tips is to consult a recruiter or established professionals in your field. Learn more about working with Accountemps to find temporary positions that match your experience, and discover how you can enhance your skills by participating in our free online accounting training program and continuing professional education (CPE) programs 2. Don’t be hasty Let the hiring manager start the salary negotiation. Likewise, if you suggest a different number and the hiring manager counters, take some time - maybe even a few days - to think about it and do any additional research before you respond. 3. Demonstrate your value Show that you have more to offer. Describe the increased value, productivity and cost savings you can bring to the table. Just make sure you’re honest about what you’re promising. 4. Consider the extras The starting salary is important, but weigh all the other tangible and intangible perks, too. You may feel more comfortable accepting slightly lower wages if the company offers you benefits like flexible scheduling, telecommuting, tuition reimbursement, a signing bonus or annual performance-based raises. 5. Be confident, but don’t blow it Keep the endgame in mind. If the company is unwilling to go higher or doesn’t have much leeway to negotiate within its standard salary ranges, don’t be arrogant. If you decide to walk away, maintain an appreciative and professional demeanor, because your paths may cross again in the future. Don't you dare do what this accounting candidate did when he was asked how much he made in his last job.

These expert tips will help you achieve sustainable wealth

These expert tips will help you achieve sustainable wealth These expert tips will help you achieve sustainable wealth The key to obtaining wealth is operating with a mind that already has it â€" observe the behavior of the successful and adopt their methods.  This isn’t a recommendation to “fake it, till you make it” but one the begs you equip yourself with the kind of mindset most conducive to financial success. Before you obtain wealth you first have to instill habits that will enable you to keep it. Tom Corley put together a comprehensive list of ways to ensure we live within our means. He advises we spend no more than 25% of income on housing expenses (whether or not we rent or own), no more than 15% on food, and no more than 5% on auto leasing.“Think of savings and investments as two completely different things. You should never lose money on your savings,” Corley says. “Try to stash six months of living expenses in an emergency fund in case you lose your job.”Corley punctuates this list by urging us to contribute as much as we can afford to a retirement plan.  Speaking of taking note of the future, most of us could stand to consider our expenses as potential earners a little more.Elizabeth MacBride of Forbes writes: “Americans see their houses, for instance, as homes, not as assets they could potentially leverage to make their lives more comfortable, as with a reverse mortgage in retirement.” Be mindful of every opportunity to furnish your income. When you have successfully learned how to maximize what you earn and your assets, you can start to focus on achieving a higher wage. But first the fear of negotiating salaries needs to be dispelled. The Ladders recently released a report based on advice from college professors on the subject, and summarized the collected advice into five helpful tips: “Find out what salary and compensation package is considered competitive for this particular role in the market/industry”. Articulate your worth clearly and confidently Maintain a sense f professionalism Pull from both academic and real-life experiences Take non-monetary perks into account Another huge part of making yourself destined for success in the future is preparing yourself for the kind of jobs it will be composed of. Automation and outsourcing will soon have an immediate effect on nearly every occupation.  This means we have to make a concerted effort to make a case for human labor over software. Devote every day to learning a new skill that will make you flexible in the economy of the future. In a piece published in USNEWS  Henry M. Levin  enforces the need for the ability to adapt. “If countries want to be economically competitive, their workers must be primed for change.” Because so many jobs are either disappearing or being changed “beyond recognition” how hirable you are is directly related to how polymathic you are.Staying the course isn’t always easy, which is why it’s important to establish and visualize goals. Aspirations hold us accountable for the day-to-day. Aaron Lee, founder and Ceo of Iluma Agency utilizes a vision board to help keep himself and his team consistently on the road of improvement.“I set an intention and ask myself: ‘How can I become a better version of “me”  in this coming year? A better leader, a better  entrepreneur, a better  person, a better family member, a better community leader …’ and then start my Vision Board with this intent,” Lee writes. “I’ve also introduced this to my team, and they now create Vision Boards for themselves and with their families to focus on intentions and priorities. I highly recommend the exercise, which provides a visual map toward realizing your goals.”Surround yourself with people that will motivate you toward your goals. Learn from those more successful than you by associating with them. In his book, “Change Your Life, Change Your Habits” Thomas H. Corley expounds the concept of this.  In his experience, your net worth mirrors that of your closest friends. Join professional groups and develop relationships with people that can impart imp ortant lessons and habits. In closingSave money day to day with the intention to invest. Relinquish the fear of negotiating your salary; what you want should be more important than how you come across in your pursuit to get it. Commit a portion of every day to the development of a new skill; be polymathic and thus undeniable.Establish lofty goals then attack them until they’re achievable. And lastly, immerse yourself in  successful-minded company.

Why you should set spending limits on gifts for your partners

Why you should set spending limits on gifts for your partners Why you should set spending limits on gifts for your partners With the holidays at hand, you’re probably feeling a lot of pressure around purchasing the perfect gifts. You want all of your friends and family to be totally thrilled with the items you choose for them (and, ideally, with your  gift wrapping  job too). Perhaps most stress-inducing is the process of choosing the  best-ever gift for your partner. Yes, you want them to be excited about the present itself, but you also want to be sure that your gift isn’t significantly more or less big or expensive than the one your S.O. gives you. If there’s a big gap between the presents you’ve bought each other, things can get awkward. The awkwardness isn’t all in your head, either. According to a recent  survey  from  Quicken, heading into the holiday season with clear spending limits for gifts within a romantic relationship can go a long way toward making spirits brighter. Of the 1,000 married adults who participated in the survey, nearly 70 percent said they agree on spending limits ahea d of time - and those people demonstrate higher levels of relationship satisfaction as well. Of those participants who reported setting spending limits, 78 percent said they are happy with how much their spouse spends, compared to 63 percent of people who don’t set those limits. Couples without spending limits are also twice as likely to wish that their spouse had spent more. And we all know that weird money vibes can create a general sense of discomfort around the holiday season as a whole. It’s best to avoid those. If this data has you feeling inspired to set a holiday spending limit in your own relationship and you’re not sure how to handle the conversation, we’ve got you! Quicken’s chief marketing officer Aimee Young offers these three tips for managing spending limits.1. Don’t avoid the discussion. While talking about money with your S.O. tends to be uncomfortable (and even more so when the money in question is meant to be spent on that S.O.), the results of Quicken ’s survey should give you the motivation you need to dive into the conversation. If you have a sneaking suspicion that holiday gift spending limits would make a big difference in your own relationship satisfaction over the holiday season, don’t be afraid to bring it up. Chances are that it’s going to pay off!2. Choose the right time to talk. “Try to find time when you and your partner are more likely to be at your best, rather than when you’re running out the door to work or have just gotten home and may need time to decompress,” Young suggests. Consider setting a date to have this particular conversation so that both you and your partner will come to the table with a good attitude and with the understanding that there’s an important discussion to be had.3. Find a comfortable way to track your goal. If you and your partner tend to come at things in a quantitative way and like to be able to track and prove things, you’re probably wondering how you can follow along wit h the progress of your spending goals without awkwardly handing each other gift receipts. How unromantic is that? Instead, use a budgeting app or online platform to input your individual spending. Yes, you and your S.O. will both still have access to the costs of the gifts you’ve bought, but you can handle it independently without breaking down all of the prices for each other IRL.Happy holidays - and happy spending (limits)! This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

How to Use Keywords to Make a Resume Recruiters Notice

How to Use Keywords to Make a Resume Recruiters Notice How to Use Keywords to Make a Resume Recruiters Notice Do you tailor your resume to match the job you’re applying for? There are some compelling reasons that you should. You already tailor other things you write to a specific audience, (e.g., emails, term papers, brochures). Why should your resume be any different? Here are a few simple   tips on how to write a resume  and tailor it to a job description. A good place to start is by making a master list of your skills. But why make a master list if you’re just going to take keywords from the job listing? The list helps you identify what kinds of job listings to target. Also, it will help you prioritize the skill keywords you will take from the job listing. So, think back on all of the jobs you’ve had and the skills you’ve learned over the years. As you add them to your list, put the ones you feel strongest about at the top. By putting your strongest skills at the top, you can see how close you are to being the perfect candidate when you select different job listings. For example, when your strongest skills line up with the skills the recruiter emphasizes in the job listing, there’s a better chance you’ll get called in for an interview. If you’re worried about whether a skill is relevant, add it anyhow. It’s best to get it all on paper and save the cherry-picking for later. Carefully   read the job listing  and highlight any skills the employer mentions - these are keywords. When a hiring manager first looks at your resume, they will scan it for these keywords. And they will only   spend an average of six seconds  trying to find them. That means that you need to put the most important keywords at the top of your resume. Make other keywords eye-catching with embellishments like numbers and accomplishments. For example, let’s say one of the requirements in the job listing is “excellent customer service skills.” You’ve decided to add it to your experience section as a key responsibility from your last job. But don’t just write “ responsible for handling customer service .” Add some value: “ Spearheaded a customer service initiative that saved the company over $50,000 and resulted in a 10 percent decrease in returns. “   Now the recruiter knows   how  excellent you are at customer service - $50,000 worth! Here’s a tip:  If you’ve ever cut costs or increased revenue, add that information. If you’re not sure by how much, estimate. Just be sure that you can back up your estimation with proof. Try to find two to three other job listings similar to the one featuring the job you’re applying for. Read through them and mark the skills listed. If you find skills that are common across these listings, there’s a good chance they’re either mandatory or highly desirable for the job you’re targeting. Next, take a trip over to LinkedIn and look at other professionals’ profiles. What skills do they list? How are they similar? If you see a pattern, you’ve figured out which skills are most likely relevant keywords for your resume. The rest of the keyword skills should fall into one of three categories: Job-related skills  are necessary for you to do the work at hand. They include things like knowing Java and Python or having the ability to operate a forklift. Chances are if you don’t have most of the job-related skills, you can’t do the work. Make sure these skills go in prominent places on your resume, like the summary or leading bullet points in your experience section. You want the hiring manager to check them off their must-have list as quickly as possible. Transferable skills  are less important than the other types. They are basic skills that most people have because they carry them from one job to another. They include things like knowing how to create pivot tables in Microsoft Excel. Hiring managers welcome them on resumes but don’t treat them as unique or extraordinary. What they can do for you is flesh out your resume and give you extra value. So, feature them in your skills section. Here’s a tip:   Don’t just write “ Microsoft Excel .”  Add the detail about the pivot tables: “ Microsoft Excel, pivot tables .” Adaptive skills  are the most elusive. They are skills like dependability and assertiveness. Usually, they are self-taught survival skills that help us thrive in society. The very nature of these skills makes them difficult to measure and demonstrate. If possible, pair the ones you feel strongest about with accomplishments that illustrate them. Scatter them throughout your resume where appropriate. Dropping your tailored resume into a word generator like   Wordle  allows you to see which words you used the most. Cloud generators make words bigger when they are used more often in a piece of text. Ignore small words like “at” or “the” and focus on the dominance of your keywords. If the most prominent words are not your keywords, you may want to rewrite your resume to increase the frequency with which you use those words. Adding more keywords will also improve the chances that your resume will pass an applicant tracking system (ATS) scan. If you need certain keywords to show up more frequently, add them to your skills or experience section. In an age where we are constantly bombarded and overwhelmed with information, you can’t expect a hiring manager to pick up a generic resume and find it relevant. It is necessary to   customize your resume  to match both the job listing and a hiring manager’s expectations. Otherwise, you might just miss that golden opportunity.
